The Story of Cambodia (Documentary) ; History to Modern
Modern Day Cambodia
Although Cambodia today is beginning to finally recover, it still is considered one of the poorest countries. Cambodia struggles with things like prostitution and starvation everyday. Due to the murder and devastation Pot Pol caused with his genocide Cambodia is still trying to recover from it today. In November, 2007 the trials were held for the Khmer Rouge to bring justice to the many lives that were lost during the genocide. Pot Pol was arrested and died of natural causes also. However today the corruption of Cambodia is still a major issue in their modern world today. Also Cambodia has to rely on other nations to help them financially. One modern issue in Cambodia is the current government that is ruled by Hun Sen. Within Sen's style of governing, human rights are not acknowledged. A revolution began when violent riots broke out between the police forces and angry protestors right after Hun Sen's elections in 2013. Demonstrators, whose number may have reached 50,000, marched down Phnom Penh's Mao Tse Toung Boulevard on Sunday, calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Hun Sen. (Siv Channa) (Phorn Bopha 2014). The protestors marched to Hun Sen's "Palace of Peace" and even agreed to lose their lives to strong armed military soldiers and police forces stationed among the perimeter of the palace.
